It was celebrating time for Spain on Sunday, after wind turbines across the country produced 53.7% of the total power demand across the country, which was equivalent to 11 nuclear reactors.
Of the total produced wind power, most of it was used immediately, nearly 6 percent was stored and 7.7 percent was exported to France, Portugal and Morocco.
Spain’s Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who is a strong admirer of renewable energy, has signaled that nuclear plants might be phased out in the near future.
According to the Spanish Environment Ministry, Spain’s government has invested 991 million Euros in wind power in 2007, and has already got a return on its investment as a saving of 1 billion Euros on the fossil fuels.
