ETA to Go Peaceful on Basque’s Independence

The leftovers of ETA's expelled political wing Batasuna and public groups have decided to take non-violent measures on the issue of seeking independence for Basque.

In response to the decision, the 700 imprisoned activists of ETA also agreed to abide by the decision taken by the party and appealed for forgiveness. But, activists were not ready to suspend ETA completely as demanded by the Government of Spain. The members also stick to the proposal to provide the residents of Basque with the right to decide on the issue of independence.

As per Government spokesman Jose Blanco, "It is an important step, a significant one. But it is not the one that society in general and the government wanted because it is not definitive, nor is it the one that announces the end of ETA".

Earlier, ETA had taken the way of massive killing by throwing bombs and shooting people, for demanding government-free Basque. The violence resulted in loss of 829 lives. Basque is located north of Spain and lasts up to south-west of France.

It was with implication of strict measures that the government was able to control the disturbed situation, and destroy the ETA group by taking huge number of activists and members of ETA into custody.
