Bangalore-Based GMR Group to Bid for Spain Airports

The Bangalore-based GMR group, which has built the Istanbul airport, and Delhi and Hyderabad airport, and also operates them, is thinking to bid for 90.5% stake in the Barcelona and Madrid airports.
The news came in to the lime light when Spanish Government took the decision for the sale of 90.5% stake in these airports to tackle the increasing debt. The contract would be for 20 years, and could get extension for another five years.
The GMR group is already building a new airport at Male; has built Terminal -3 at Delhi airport and is in contact with the South Korean Government to tie- up with Incheon Airport to bid for Puerto Rico airport. According to the officials, they are also thinking to have a share in Indonesia and African airports.
The base price for the bidding has been fixed at $5.2 billion for the Madrid airport, which is the 11th busiest airport in the world and handles over 49 million passengers in a year, while for the Barcelona, which is the 10th busiest airport, and handles over 29 million passengers per annum, the base price has been kept $2.2 billion.
A GMR spokesperson said that they are looking for local partners to tie up for Spain airports.
