Mayor Removes the Image of King of Basque City

On Friday, in the first meeting since the elections, it was found out that Juan Karlos Izagirre announced that the painting of the King should be removed, as it does not represent the majority of the people in the Basque City.

This action of the mayor could lead him against the legal consequences as the constitution states that every town hall should display the image of the monarch. The mayor belongs to the newly formed Bildu party, which has fought a court battle to field the candidates in the election that happened on 22 May because of the links connected with some of the terrorist group.

Mr. Izagirre, who is a doctor by profession, was chosen to lead the municipality of San Sebastian, which is the second largest city in the northern region. His party has exceeded expectations and won eight seats and has power since 1991.

It was reported that Spain’s Constitutional Court has reversed a Supreme Court decision to ban some 250 lists of candidates from the Bildu coalition because they all are considered as the successors of Batasuna, which is the one of the banned political wing of the separatist organization.

The rival politicians from the Basque socialist party PP have claimed that they would try their best to ensure the image of king would be restored.
