Spanish wind sector installs additional 727MW in H1 of 2010

As per recent reports by the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE), the country’s wind industry has installed 727 MW in new capacity in the period of January-June of this year.

Meanwhile, the country’s total installed capacity reached 19.88GW, with AEE announcing that Spain is on its way to reach its 2010 renewables goal of 20.15GW by the end of the year.

Wind power covered around 17 percent of the country’s total power demand in the first six months of this year, and touched the mark of 40 percent of demand on 4 May.

AEE is now waiting for the final call from the government to settle down a new regulatory framework to help meet targets to set-up in the new “National Renewable Energy Plan 2010-2020”, which foresees wind capacity increasing to 38GW in the coming ten years.

While talking to media, AEE president Jose Donoso said, “The sector hopes that this legislation is completed as soon as possible to put an end to the uncertainty that has affected the sector. It is fundamentally important that investors have long term visibility and that a reasonable level of profitability is guaranteed for future projects.”

Country’s wind sector has decided a impermanent reduction in subsidies for part of the country’s installed capacity to support government investment, and presently awaiting a definitive framework to set-up support after 2013.
