Rail strike hits Spain hard

A strike by employees at Spain's national rail company disturbed the train services, as millions of people planned to leave on a four-day Easter holiday weekend.

While talking to reporters, a spokesperson from the railway network Renfe said, “One in four long and medium-distance trains were cancelled, including several on the high-speed line between Madrid and Barcelona, affecting over 13,000 passengers.”

Moreover, the passengers on trains affected by the strike were given the option of traveling on a later date or getting a refund.

Meanwhile, the CGT union, which called the strike, stated that the strike was observed by about 70-80 percent of Renfe workers. But, Renfe placed the figure at 2.0 percent.

CGT is protesting the reclassification of the jobs of some Renfe employees.

Further, the one-day long strike took place at a time when millions of people had planned their Easter holiday that starts on Thursday in what is one of the busiest days of the year for travel in Spain.
