Spain's Council of Ministers has green lit anti-piracy statute law permitting its federal court to close or block internet sites streaming or offering illegal downloads of films as well as music content.
Moreover, the anti-piracy law would see the introduction of an intellectual property commission at the Ministry of Culture that would channel grievances to a judge.
Now the bill will be forqrded to the National Parliament, and is expected to receive a green signal by summer.
Whilst the Coalition of Creators and Contents Industry welcomed the step taken by the government; the judicial officials and the office of the public prosecutor have increased legal objections to the legislation.
However, the most strident reactions have come from the Internet society, one of whose associations branded the bill an “administrative kidnapping of Spanish websites.”
Talking to media, managing director of anti piracy org Federacion Anti Pirateria, Jose Manuel Tourne said, “Spain tops Western Europe's ranking of online downloads. Almost 400 million companies and 60 million vidgames were downloaded or shared in the last year.”
