Spain, France, Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan endorse Mediterranean Union

The Foreign Ministers of Spain, France, Egypt, Tunisia and Jordan assembled to try and get the bogged-down Mediterranean Union back on the right track.

The main motive of the conference and of the dinner afterwards was to look for a consensus on the election of a secretary general with a vision to hold the union’s second summit, planned for June 7 in Barcelona, said an official close to the Spanish department.

During the conference, Spain’s Miguel Angel Moratinos, Bernard Kouchner of France, Ahmed Abul Gheit of Egypt, Jordan’s Naser Yoda and Tunisian Foreign Minister Abdelwahab Abdallah were there.

A chance was offered for capturing photos but the program did not comprise a press meeting to disclose what had been discussed.

This forum, through which almost 40 Mediterranean nations seek to set-up closer relations, has been at a standstill due to Israel’s military offensive over Gaza in December 2008.

The meeting held with an increase in diplomatic activity in the country, exactly in order to try and reactive relations between Arabs and Israelis.
