According to the sources, Spain’s Telefonica has allocated a deal to ZTE to manufacture a WiMAX network.
However, the exact value of the deal has not been disclosed yet.
It is learnt that it is the largest deal bagged by the ZTE from a European operator.
Meanwhile, company’s Iberbanda will operate the network and comes after the Spanish operator has named Israel’s Alvarion back in May to develop its WiMAX network in Catalonia.
This newest award to ZTE does not clarify when or where the deployment will happen, or if it involves collaboration with Alvarion.
ZTE is also one of the equipment vendors nominated by Telefonica for its LTE trials in six European nations.
In the month of October, Clearwire unveiled its plans to provide mobile WiMAX services in the Spanish cities of Malaga and Seville starting 2010.
According to the statement issued by the company, “We would be using WiMAX 802.16e infrastructure equipment from Alvarion and ZTE in the 3.5GHz band to offer high-speed mobile broadband services under the Clear brand.”
