Spain’s largest solar facility to start by 2010 end

According to the recent reports, a solar power facility under construction in southwestern Spain will be the biggest in the country when it gets finished by the end of this year.

Moreover, the Spanish system integrator Assyce Fotovoltaica is developing a solar power facility in the autonomous area of Extremadura. After its competition, the facility will cover 170 acres and produce near about 42 million KW hours of electricity every year.

Acciona acquires Wind Power Pioneer for $57.5 million

Acciona SA, Spain’s second-largest wind-power operator, has paid out around 42.5 million euros (US$57.5 million) to former director Esteban Morras Andres for his interest in two of its plants.

Moreover, a pioneer in Spanish wind energy, Morras co-founded Corporacion Energia Hidroelectrica de Navarra SA, one of the country’s earliest wind-turbine operators, which was sold in 2003 to Acciona, then largely a construction company.

Spanish power demand declines by 4.3% in 2009

The national grid operator of Spain has declared that the demand of power in the country has declined by 4.3 percent in this year.

According to the opening report, REE (REE. MC) total demand of 251,305 gigawatt-hours in mainland Spain, or 4.6% below as against 2008, before making adjustmens for variations in temperature and workdays.

Spain awards solar subsidies for 500 MW in 2009

According to the news released by the government of Spain, the world’s second largest producer of solar power has awarded subsidies to planned solar power plants with a total generating capacity of 502 MW, quite enough to supply 125,000 homes.

While talking to reporters, the Industry Ministry said, “We had completed the fourth round of bidding for photovoltaic (PV) projects scheduled for 2009, which will be entitled to receive "feed-in" tariffs of up to 340 euros ($505.9) per megawatt-hour for 25 years.”

Zapatero Open On Nuclear Plant Life Spans

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is ready to hold talks on extending the life span of nuclear power plants for more than forty years.

While talking to reporters, the Spanish PM said, “The added value which a state pact on energy can offer may make us change our positions.”

Earlier, the prime minister had given indications to Congress on a sustainable economy bill presented by his government, in which he told that he was willing to discuss with opposition parties on energy plan.

Wind turbines supply half of the Spain’s national power grid

It was celebrating time for Spain on Sunday, after wind turbines across the country produced 53.7% of the total power demand across the country, which was equivalent to 11 nuclear reactors.

Of the total produced wind power, most of it was used immediately, nearly 6 percent was stored and 7.7 percent was exported to France, Portugal and Morocco.

Spain’s Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who is a strong admirer of renewable energy, has signaled that nuclear plants might be phased out in the near future.

Iberdrola records flat profits in third quarter

Iberdrola, Spain's largest electricity company, has announced that it has recorded flat profits in third quarter of 2009 even though the company is recovering fast from the economic slowdown.

The company has predicted its business to improve by the end of the existing year.

The power group has posted a net profit of 552.6 million euros in the third quarter of 2009 as compared to the 522.1 million euros for the corresponding quarter a year ago.
